Why is better typing productive for business and employees?
Employers know that an accurate and fast typist, for specific positions, can significantly outperform other persons in both productivity and performance. Studies have shown that very fast typists also have improved accuracy requiring fewer corrections and editing ‘after the fact”.
What this means to an employer is that a person typing 60 words per minute is more than twice as effective as someone typing 30 words per minute. Many positions in a company do not require this level of speed, but some do!
High level executive assistants, transcriptionists, and others need a high level of skill to perform their job functions effectively.
For employees the higher skill levels translate into higher pay levels. In one recent study, a person typing 75 words per minute with average accuracy for their speed level earned 2.5 times someone typing 40 words per minute and average accuracy for their speed level. Simply put, higher speeds usually translate to higher earnings.
Every employee should strive to exceed the minimum proficient to achieve English language general certification. This first level of achievement, Proficient, is to reach 25 words per minute, or more, with a proficient accuracy level at or above the average for this level. More than 40% of the population does not meet these minimum measures.
Additional levels can be achieved thereafter. The five levels of Achievement are:
- Master
- Expert
- Professional
- Advanced
- proficient

Every organization benefits by having employees with improved typing skills. Improved productivity and cost savings both are results of accurate, fast typing skills. Some positions require higher speeds and accuracies and the measure of these skills is paramount to the success of the person performing the duties of their position.
All companies and professional firms should only recognize certifications that are from TIA officially sanctioned organizations (see Sanctioned Organizations).
Individuals benefit by having the prestige of a certification from an officially sanctioned organization (see Sanctioned Organizations). Our Standards of English Language General Certification are the only standards established that ensure each person has met or exceeded the standard established for each level of skills. |
